Project Overview-
Nelson Hall, on the University of Wisconsin Stevens-Point campus is in need of a new lighting plan in its public area. This area includes a lounge, corridor and open conference area. The building was built in 1915 and is the second oldest building on the UWSP campus. The space has a large fireplace, hardwood floors, many windows and large decorative crown and baseboard.
The space needs the lighting updated but it should be dynamic to allow for a variety of activities to happen there. A custom luminaire is requested to enhance the space visually but should also add to the function of the area.
This project was a team effort in collaboration with Alexis Cordova. We focused on creating different lighting layers, specifically ambient and task. We added decorative lighting on the fireplace to make it a focal point while also creating lighting that acted as ambient and decorative to light the crown molding while giving a soft ambient glow off the walls.
With the use of down-lights, wall washers, and our custom luminaire we have successfully created a dynamic lighting plan. In the conference area, we paired downlights around the table to offer direct task lighting with wall washers on each side to create soft indirect ambient lighting. Then adding two custom luminaires above for visual enhancements and general light. The corridor has downlights to illuminate the hall with a custom luminaire as a focal point. Lastly, the lounge also incorporates downlighting and wall washers with our custom luminaire to allow for a dynamic lighting scheme. Additionally, we added sconces to the fireplace wall to add an additional layer of decorative lighting.
